healthcare...oh the joy of it all....

woohoo...it is time again for my HealthCare soapbox...

first off, I'm thinking I like this angle...
http://westorlandonews.com/2009/11/05/grayson-gets-in-gop-face-on-house-floor/

secondly, do you think we should ignore Kidney Disease?

a recent Harvard Study
http://pnhp.org/excessdeaths/health-insurance-and-mortality-in-US-adults.pdf
wow..i find this somehow, not surprising ->  "Conclusions. Uninsurance is associated with mortality."  by they way, according to this study more folks die from lack of insurance than from Kidney Disease each year.

please...if you care.  speak up.  email, call, write, send smoke signals or Morse Code...but do something and do it this week. your Rep needs to hear from you in order to know what you want.  he/she cannot read minds...and the loudest voice is likely to win.

I understand how the Left and Right are supposed to work.  but in recent times, they are not.  the GOP (and boy did I come up with some fun words for GOP to stand for, anyway...) has used 2 tactics.  1) FUD.  and FUD pisses me off.  2) stall.  by stalling they wear out the populous while tainting the soup with their venomous FUD.  this expends the available 'political capital' and what comes out the other side of the sausage factory is so watered down and covered in political fat...that whomever sponsored it looks the fool.  hence, they get a shot term and long term victory.  they being the Republican members of the House and Senate.  but what does the American populous get?

If a gov't run Health-Care plan is as terrible as they say, then I call for all GOP members to drop their gov't provided health care active immediately.  I would go so far as have our legislators do whatever necessary to allow such to happen within 30days (we wouldn't want them to have to keep such a dreadful plan until the annual window now would we).  If they are unwilling to do so, then I assume the gov't is indeed able to successfully administer such a plan.

If using this filibuster proof process is so terrible then i have two things to say.
don't talk shit.  if you have voted yes to 13 of the last 17 'budget reconciliation's" that have crossed your desk.  STFU.  Mr Mitch Mconnell I'm speaking to you.
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=124628576

If using Cost is your game....
why can we afford two wars but not health-care? we can afford to wage war on two countries (one of which we arguably should not have engaged in) but not to help the less fortunate members of our society get preventative care? we can afford to kill people on the other side of the world for their oil but not provide basic humanitarian aid to those living on our shores.  (note i DID NOT say citizen).  health-care is not immigration. if you got a problem with non-citizens, lets take it up with immigration and please let us leave the doctors to do what they do.  save lives and improve quality of life; let them care for the sick and the wounded. it is not the job of Emergency Room staff to verify citizenry. no. Period.  not their job.  their job is to save lives...we have immigration/border security to keep out the illegals.  perhaps some financial reform may help.  but then again, how many Americans are actually out of a job due to an illegal immigrant?  seriously.  we should at least provide some medical care else we'd have to mow our own lawns, clean our own homes and offices, work our farmland, do our own manual labor...mmmm...basically, do the hard dirty jobs that most Americans are too good to do.  sorry...back on point...but how will we afford it? we shall do as we have always done.  we shall stand up take care of our own and find a way.  no different than any of our families would do in a serious dilemma.  you do not kick your grandma out to live under a bridge cause she's old.  or uncle Joe cause he smells funny.  or aunt Sally cause she's a pain in the ass.  or cousin Barry cause he did something stoopid.  in most cases, we stand up and show solidarity with our (ie: family, town, city, state, nation, ethnic group, religious group, etc). let us not do just walk away from those that need help.  there is never a perfect time and if you argue that we must wait until later for whatever reason, then you are part of the problem and maybe you are not a member of the American family.  or maybe you just don't love your family.

but "the American people are against it'..  this is not necessarily true.  this is word play.
many are against the health-care bill cause they are tired and confused (see above).  but almost all for for the provisions it's trying to implement and/or the general idea. as always, read closely the polls that are being quoted.  http://www.ncpp.org/?q=node/4
polls are like statistics and accounting...with proper manipulation they will display the answer you desire.

i will end with this quote from Representative Grayson:
"What the Republicans have been doing is an insult to America."

Whats good for the goose is good for the gander

http://www.star-telegram.com/804/story/1607397.html

OK...seriously folks.  take that deep breath.  just because someone has differing views does not make them evil incarnate.  really...it doesn't.  just because someone feels we should do more to help the lower class does not make them evil.  just because someone feels that tax breaks can fix all our woes does not make them evil.  differing ideas can be very powerful.

some of the best solutions I've ever implemented came from whiteboard sessions with strongly opinionated folks.  whether we had to overcome a political obstacle within the organization or a technical obstacle in the system.  sometimes the solution implemented was not the best technically, but it met other constraints in such a way to make it the preferred solution  (office politics, user base training, cost, time line, etc). Some solutions are spectacular while others are bland.  but that's OK, slowly and surely progress is made. in fact, there are some who believe that very dynamic helps us move forward in a safer manner.  as i told a colleague of mine, "we are a good combination. you are very conservative in nature and i am very curious.  this helps our network. without my new ideas, the network would grow stale and outdated.  without you to help define direction and slow the implementation of those ideas, the network would grow unwieldy and ineffectual."

If you kept your child from watching Obama's speech out of fears of indoctrination, then please do not use the word "indoctrination" as a bad word in and of itself.  why? Because, your desire to keep the child from hearing the Commander in Chief of the United States of America out of fears that he will somehow indoctrinate your child to some twisted socialist plot is nothing more than you indoctrinating the child in the opposite direction.  indoctrination is indoctrination (which, by the way, you may want to update your working definition of the word)

lets take a second to review "indoctrination" and "education".  i kinda like the opening line of the wiki article so i'll just post it here for you...  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indoctrination

"Indoctrination is the process of inculcating ideas, attitudes, cognitive strategies or a professional methodology. It is often distinguished from education by the fact that the indoctrinated person is expected not to question or critically examine the doctrine they have learned. As such it is used pejoratively. Instruction in the basic principles of science, in particular, can not properly be called indoctrination, in the sense that the fundamental principles of science call for critical self-evaluation and sceptical scrutiny of one's own ideas."

i believe it is good for a growing mind to be exposed to numerous different beliefs and ideas.  perhaps the more the better.  but definitely more than one.  expand the mind of the next generation.  help allow them to be greater than we are/were.  there's a lot of people on this rock we call earth.  finding ways to get along and understand others will become more important as time wanders on.

LOL u silly freeeks

ok.  everyone.   stop.  take a deep breath.   hold it for couple seconds.  now, slowly let it out.  please repeat as many times as is necessary to regain some semblance of sanity.

so president obama is going to speak to our kids.  OMG.  you'd think Stalin or Hitler himself was taking main stage.  c'mon people.  let's do a little fact checking BEFORE we freek out and look even more stoopider than we already do.

obama is not the first president to ever speak directly to school students.  via TV or in person.  lets not forget where mr bush was at on the morning of Sept 11th 2001 shall we.

Jesus forbids a public health insurance option

"In what New Testament does Jesus Christ favor support for a system whereby health insurance companies make obscene profits for NOT providing health care to the sick and injured? I've been combing the New Testament, and I simply cannot find the part where Jesus forbids a public health insurance option to make sure everyone gets health care.
And what about all of the false witness that's being borne by so many self-described religious people? Do you realize most of the people who are comparing Obama to Hitler, and those who are propagating all of those lies about what's in the health reform bills profess "family values" and claiming kinship with Jesus?
And it's not just about health care. God supposedly told George Bush to invade Iraq and kill tens of thousands of Iraqis. Presumably, the Lord also told him to hand out hundreds of billions of dollars in contract to his biggest supporters. When he invaded Afghanistan, he called it a "crusade," until someone with a brain told him that wasn't a good idea."

Christians...Enuff of the Pick-n-Choose...Believe it or NOT.

Well said. I've never understood how folks can tell which parts of the bible are "metaphorical" vs "literal" .... and the part about the old testament being obsolete, but "we keep around for historical purposes", until they find some random statement that want the Support Of God for.

If you believe that book is the word of God...then must not the entire tome be the word of God? if it is not entirely the word of god..then where is the secret decoder ring located so that i may know the fact from the parable.

F.U.D. = Fear Uncertainty Doubt

FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) is the term for any strategy intended to make a company's customers insecure about future product plans with the purpose of discouraging them from adopting competitors' products. For example, "You can try using X instead of our product, but you may lose all your data."

Wiki on FUD
FUD is a manifestation of the appeal to fear.

--------
Wiki - Appeal to Fear
This fallacy has the following argument form:

Either P or Q is true.
Q is frightening.
Therefore, P is true.

The argument is invalid. The appeal to emotion is used in exploiting existing fears to create support for the speaker's proposal, namely P. Also, often the false dilemma fallacy is involved, suggesting Q is the proposed idea's sole alternative.

--------
http://www.propagandacritic.com/articles/ct.sa.fear.html
“In contemporary politics, the fear-appeal continues to be widespread. When a politician agitates the public's fear of immigration, or crime, and proposes that voting for her will reduce the threat, she is using this technique. When confronted with persuasive messages that capitalize on our fear, we should ask ourselves the following questions:

  • Is the speaker exaggerating the fear or threat in order to obtain my support?
  • How legitimate is the fear that the speaker is provoking?
  • Will performing the recommended action actually reduce the supposed threat?
  • When viewed dispassionately, what are the merits of the speaker's proposal? “

Nice FUD rebutal site

http://pleasecutthecrap.typepad.com/main/2009/07/deconstructing-the-right-wing-lies-health-bill.html

HealthCareX

This is not a funny email. This is not meant to entertain you. This email is meant to upset you. If it makes you uncomfortable…good. Perhaps it will piss you off…perhaps you will agree. I do not have a solution. In fact, I’ve found that I don’t really have desire to debate this issue (I know…I know…that may surprise one or two of you)…I only care that we find “A Better Solution“. I hope this email does encourage you to take action. To take 10min and write a letter, take 5min and make a phone call or take 1min and send an email or 30 seconds to sign an electronic petition, whatever your personal level of interest in this topic. Please let your congressmen and senators know what you feel about this issue. Encourage your friends and family to take action. Please take a moment and make decision. Take a stand…then speak out. Give our legislators the political will they need to find A Better Solution. This august, they are not on vacation putting up their heals with a glass of whiskey and a cigar at the local country club…well, ok, they probably are gunna do that too. But guess what they’ll be talking about while they do? Help give some direction to what they talk about. I hope you inform them that we need change. The status quo isn’t working for 50 million Americans. That’s a lot of people.

First and foremost…Be aware of the significant amount of FUD being spread on this topic. FUD = Fear Uncertainty Doubt…it is the skillful manipulation of other by playing on fear often by way of “innocent misquotes” or anonymous statements. There are many powerful groups and individuals that have much money on the line … both for and against reforms. Be wary of what you read and what you hear. Including this, for I can assure you…this letter is biased.

You’ll notice I didn’t title this email “Health Care Reform” or “Health Insurance Reform” or any of the other key word phrases. Why? ‘Cause I don’t really care what you call it, so long as we start moving this behemoth towards a solution that reflects the values of this nation. We’re all for healthcare reform but only if nothing changes. WTF? Touch the pocketbook and we become selfish bastards with no care or concern for people outside our immediate circle. We feel sympathy for sick and dying but no empathy…unless it’s your son or daughter or mother or brother. The stories of people who have fallen thru the Texas sized cracks in our Health Care System are numerous and heart wrenching. Most of us know people in this situation. Many of us have tried paying for “COBRA” for one reason or another over the years…if you haven’t let me put it this way. Did you bitch when gas rose to $4/gallon? Why? Did it mess up your monthly budget just a tad? Instead of paying $300 for 100 gallons of gas you had to pay $400 for the same amount. Trying inserting an extra rent or mortgage payment in there instead. I’ve never met a person that paid less than $750/mth for COBRA insurance. Only, the gas thing…most of us were spending additional gas money to get to work…if you take out COBRA it’s because you have not job. Do the math. It sucks. Some of you know my x-wife. She has to deal with preexisting conditions. She came to within days of experiencing a lapse in coverage that would have been most unpleasant. As it was with her out of work, we had to shell out $850/mth to keep her covered on COBRA for four months. By the way, the COBRA coverage was nowhere near as good as her previous policy that was tied to her job.

Yes, we may have some of the best doctors available to mankind and the most advanced medical doo-hickies on the planet and drugs…well, yeah, our pharmaceuticals are truly awesome. Of course, those are only useful if you can afford to utilize them. If you are independently wealthy or work for a fortune500 company, then you’re fine. But if you work as a waitress or bartender or are in-between jobs, you just pray you don’t get sick or have an accident. Many of you have a favorite restaurant or bar or similar type establishment…that waitress or bartender that knows you by name, face or by what you order…ask him or her about their healthcare situation. The stories you hear may sadden you…they sadden me. Act now. Talk to others. Yeah, the news media is handy to get some of the details. But TV and radio and most www’s are one way communication…just like this email will be to most of you. It is one person or entity giving their spin on the topic. If all you do is listen to CNN or NPR or FOX or whatever your personal favorite is, then you’re missing out on being part of the solution.

It may well be that costs will increase on the front side of process change of this magnitude. That’s fine. We always hear both sides of the isle cry “it’s for the children”…ok…consider this an investment in our future. If it’s all about the $$$ think of it this way, if the kids grow up healthier you can work them harder as adults; they’ll be less likely to have acute or chronic medical issues and thus less sick days. If it’s about the humanity, then you can be glad you helped make the country a better and healthier place.

I am a healthy male in my mid30’s. A tad overweight and chances are high that if it comes to natural causes, my death will be via a cardiac crisis. I have a “good career path” in that, chances are low that I’ll be out of a job for long periods of time and will usually get good insurance. And since I’m healthy (so far), I have no preexisting conditions to contend with I can pray during any potentials lapse in coverage. For that I am grateful. For those of you have preexisting conditions, I hope you’re married or young enough to stay on your parents insurance. The problem those of you without insurance face…to be perfectly honest...is people like me. Aside from bitchin each year that my premium has gone up and services have gone down…yet again; I can not complain about my ability to get to see a doctor or receive treatment. If I sit on my ass and do nothing, I will not see a direct positive or negative effect on my day to day life. I will have not helped my future self, nor my friends or family, nor those that I do not nor (or really care to know). Doing nothing is almost always easier than doing something. But the rewards are a lot less satisfying.

The system is not sustainable. It will collapse under its own weight and the longer we wait the more costly the repairs will seem to be.

For those making the comment that our system must be good because folks come from around the world to our medical centers.

1) Many other centers around the world can also claim “foreign patients” due to some specialty practice or device.

– Just because some Doctors in some high end research facility are able to separate Siamese twins joined at the head doesn’t mean that the lady who cuts my hair and has adult onset diabetes can get what she needs to remain healthy. Is it cheaper for us to ensure she gets her meds and preventative care or wait till she shows up as an indigent in the emergency room?

2) Why does your grandma get her meds from Canada?

Because they’re not covered and/or are too expensive to buy in the U.S. Why is the US not negotiating stronger with the Pharmaceutical companies? We’re not talkn about an enterprise that can barely makes ends meet here.

I’m not sure what the solution looks like. Something should be done about preexisting conditions and COBRA. Grandma shouldn’t have to get her meds from Canada. I think a focus toward preventative medicine would be well spent. Another place to start is to look closer at eliminating cigarettes from our society and decreasing obesity. The other day a report came out that indicates 25% of our population is “Obese”. You think that has zero effect on the overall cost of the system? You can add this to the “it’s for the children section”.

An individual should be responsible for their health…NOT their doctor.

In an effort to help. I’ve tracked down a couple links you may find of interest. (If you oppose my view, feel free to write your own email)

Let’s find A Better Solution.

Personal Rant Section…..

I found that as of today searching for a healthcare petition will bring up a “Free Our Health Care Now” petition. As most of you know nothing pisses me off more than FUD. And wow…digging thru the immense search results was fun…I did find this, though I cannot verify its unbiased accuracy http://www.examiner.com/x-6489-Madison-Political-Buzz-Examiner~y2009m6d23-Who-started-the-Free-Our-Health-Care-Now-petition-and-its-relationship-to-the-GOP

this does bring up a good point….make sure that YOU agree with any petition that you sign and that it makes sense. Don’t sign something that is uselessly vague or written in pure legalese. Don’t sign something because it looks and sounds patriotic. I’ve seen much of that…lots of Red/White/Blue…Bald Eagles and Mountains…even images of Uncle Sam…This has NOTHING to do with politics and EVERYTHING to do with humanity.

This comment was a catalyst for me:

“This health care issue Is D-Day for freedom in America.”… “If we’re able to stop Obama on this it will be his Waterloo. It will break him.”

– Jim DeMint (R-SC)

I thought this issue was about healthcare. Silly me.
